Home Remedies for Headaches
The term headache literally means a pain in the head. It is one of the most common reasons that a person seeks medical care. There are several types, including tension headache, migraine headache, and cluster headache. Infrequently, headaches may be a symptom of a more serious disease.
Headache can also be classified as either acute or chronic. An acute headache is a single event of short duration and is not related previous, recurrent episodes. With or without painkillers, the acute headache sufferer will have a full and complete recovery without long term effects. Most humans have had temporary head pain, such as headaches caused by exposure to paint fumes, unrelated to a pattern of recurrent headache.
Causes of Headaches
Tension headaches are thought to be caused by contraction of the muscles around the skull. These headaches are worse during times of stress, depression, and anxiety. Migraine headaches are thought to be caused by cycle of spasm and relaxation of the blood vessels in the head. Although the exact cause of cluster headaches is unknown, they too, are thought to be associated with changes in the blood vessels of the head. More serious causes of headaches include tumors, blood clots, and infections.
A good medical history and physical exam will be sufficient in diagnosing most types of headaches. In some cases, x-rays or scans of the head and sinuses may be necessary.
