Home Remedies for Sunburn










The overexposure of the skin to harmful ultraviolet radiations emitted by the sun results in a condition called sunburn. Sunburn is more prevalent among people who love to tan their skin under the sun. As a preventive measure, it is advisable to carry some sun block as it cuts the effect of the ultraviolet radiations. Though the sun is the prime source of ultraviolet rays, there are other sources such as tanning lamps and welding arcs. Sunburns should not be left unattended as they can have an adverse effect on one’s health. There a variety of medications available to cure sunburn.

Causes & Symptoms of Sunburn

The causes of sunburn are overexposure to the sun, tanning lamps, outdoor activities, excessive intake of birth control pills and also sometimes the antibacterial agents used in soaps. As with any disease, sunburn has certain symptoms. The symptoms of sunburn are the reddening accompanied with the skin becoming tender, blister formation. Apart from these, there are other symptoms like skin peeling, fever and chills, vomiting, nausea, flu, sensitivity to incident light as well as rash. Sunburn is similar to a creeper that initiates its growth by coiling around a tree for support, in due course of time grows around its former supporter and one day stands as a pathway to climb the very tree that once supported it.

A mixture of olive oil and vinegar applied before bath also cures sunburn.

A proportionate paste of turmeric, yoghurt and barely applied over the regions of sunburn provides a soothing effect.

Sandalwood paste is applied on the skin that has been sunburned as sandalwood has cooling properties.

Slices of onion are applied on the forehead of the patient suffering from sunburn.

The application of neem or coconut oil on the body before and after each shower is very useful in the therapy of sunburn.

Pungent as well as spicy food should be avoided by the patients at all costs.

Pure gel of aloe on the site of sunburn is highly beneficial in the medication of sunburn.

Refreshing and cool baths are an alternative method of combating sunburns especially when they occur on a larger scale.

Consuming small quantities of raw mango juice with salt and sugar twice a day in the healing of sun burn.

Plantain or apple cider vinegar is of great assistance in the nursing of sunburn.

The munificent usage of sunscreen is recommended. A hat and also other protective clothing shield the skin from the sun. Light clothing also buffers the skin against the sun.
